FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Police have filed assault and weapons charges against a man accused of firing at Fayetteville officers Thursday evening.

Nereus Amon McNair, 20, of 157 Old Shaw Road, was charged Sunday with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a government official and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. He was being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center.

Officers Michael Boone, 42, and Jonathan Seaman, 23, responded to calls about a domestic disturbance at 4432 Ruby Road around 6:15 p.m. Thursday, police spokesman Chris Davis said.

They talked briefly with a man outside the home before he pulled out a gun and fired at the officers, Davis said. The officers returned fire, and the gunman ran into the house. He was later arrested without incident.

McNair was wounded in the shoulder. Davis said that a resident at the home, who wasn't identified, also suffered a non-life-threatening injury.

McNair was serving two concurrent probation sentences, according to state Department of Correction records. He was convicted in April of breaking and entering and in 2009 of felonies, including larceny, breaking and entering, and hit-and-run.

Police said that he was arrested on Nov. 24 and charged with assault on a law enforcement officer and felony drug offenses.

Boone and Seaman were placed on administrative leave with pay, pending the outcome of an investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation. That follows standard procedure for all officer-involved shootings.
