FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Authorities say a Fayetteville public works employee died when his excavating machine toppled into a lake.
Local media outlets report James Ivey's body was pulled from the water Tuesday afternoon.
City spokesman Kevin Arata says workers were fixing a bridge damaged by flooding from Hurricane Matthew. Ivey was operating a mini-excavating machine, moving dirt at the water's edge.
State Department of Labor spokesman Neal O'Briant said Wednesday the machine slid into the water and overturned after the ground beneath it collapsed.
A larger machine pulled the excavator from the water, but Ivey wasn't inside. Police divers found him.
Ivey was a water resources crew leader and 13-year veteran of the city's Public Works Commission.
