Women's theater group plans 'Little Women' performance, tea for families

Little Women will be presented as an interactive holiday tea, according to a press release. The festive event will include tea and treats as well as singing, dancing and merrymaking. The family-friendly production is best for ages 6 and up.

The festival started this summer and, so far, has produced eight mainstage plays in six locations around the Triangle during the month of August. The mission is to create, produce, and promote extraordinary theater by women. About 78 percent of tickets are purchased by women but only about 20 percent of plays produced are actually written by women, according to the group.

The show is adapted for stage by Lorelei Lemon and Ashley Popio, the festival's founder.

"We wanted to create more opportunities for women to have their voices heard through their writing but also to have those works directed and produced by women because representation in those areas are also slim," Bronwen Mischel, the group's managing director, tells me.

The show will be set during Christmas after Mr. March has gone to war, leaving Mrs. March and her four daughters at home.

"The story of the March Family is timeless, capturing the love, joy, heartache, and pain that every family experiences together," Lemon said in a press release. "It reminds us that love and strength always remain, even in the face of war, change, social unrest, poverty, and loss.”
