Woman walking with cane struck, killed by vehicle in Durham

A woman died Wednesday night in Durham when she was hit by a car as she crossed the street.

DURHAM, N.C. — A woman died Wednesday night in Durham when she was hit by a car as she crossed the street.

The crash happened around 10:30 p.m. on Morgan Street near the Carolina Theater, according to police. The woman with a cane, identified as Katherine Leonardis, 75, of Chapel Hill was crossing the street when she was hit by a Toyota Camry driven by Betty Jo Love, 57, of Durham.

Leonardis died at the scene.

Leonardis' husband, Santo Leonardis, 75, was treated for injuries and released from the hospital.

Police said the pair was not walking in a marked pedestrian crosswalk.

No charges have been filed.
