FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A Fayetteville woman threatening to commit suicide was shot Thursday night as a police officer tried to disarm her, police said.

Officer Mark Laramie responding to a call about a suicidal person found a woman armed with a handgun outside a home in the 7200 block of Rockridge Road at about 6:30 p.m., police said.

Laramie initially asked the woman to put the gun down, and when he subsequently tried to disarm her, she shot herself in a struggle for the gun, police said.

The unidentified 27-year-old woman was recovering Friday at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Her condition wasn't released, but police said the wound wasn't life-threatening.

Laramie, who has been with the Fayetteville Police Department since June 2009, has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation of the incident, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.
