Woman shot during robbery of check-cashing store

Raleigh police are investigating a shooting that happened at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at a check cashing store in the 4000 block of Wake Forest Road.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A robber shot a female clerk at a check-cashing business in the 4000 block of Wake Forest Road Wednesday night, police said.

Officers responded to calls about an armed robbery in progress at Mexico Lindo around 8:30 p.m.

Witnesses told police that a man dressed in green camouflage entered the business. A mask covered the lower half of his face, and he carried a handgun.

He shot a clerk, Modesta Fernandez-Lucas, 25, multiple times and then jumped over the counter, police said. He fled from the scene on foot.

Fernandez-Lucas was taken to WakeMed, where she was listed in fair condition Thursday morning. Officials said her injuries were non-life-threatening.

Police said they were reviewing surveillance video from the store.
