Woman's body found in Cumberland woods

A woman's body was found Saturday morning in some woods south of Fayetteville, Cumberland County authorities said.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A woman's body was found Saturday morning in some woods south of Fayetteville, Cumberland County authorities said.

Hunters found the body of Maya Makio Carlton, 34, of Jacksonville, off the 6800 block of Cedar Creek Road. The body was sent to the Office of the State Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death.

"Shocked. Absolutely shocked," said Harold Nance, pastor of a Maysville church where Carlton's family worhships. "We don't know where death is and especially when it's a young person, it really hurts."

Carlton was last seen by friends in Jacksonville late Wednesday night or in the early hours of Thursday in a burgundy vehicle with an unknown black man, authorities said.
