Woman reports kidnapping, assault in Halifax County

Posted September 30, 2009

— Sheriff's deputies from Wayne and Halifax counties were investigating an alleged kidnapping and assault Wednesday.

Kimberly Diane Matthews told authorities that she was driving on N.C. Highway 13 when she thought she saw someone she knew walking along the road. By the time she realized the man was a stranger, Matthews said, he had gotten in her car.

Matthews told authorities the man forced her to drive around, assaulted her repeatedly and eventually took her jewelry, purse and cell phone.

Matthews said the man left her stranded in Halifax County after her car ran out of gas. She was found at 5 a.m. by a member of the state Highway Patrol.

Matthews described her assailant as a white man in his 40s with thinning, blond hair, a mustache and beard. He is about 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighs about 220 pounds and was missing a front tooth. He was last seen wearing a green shirt and khaki cargo shorts.

Anyone with information about the man's identity is asked to contact the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office at 919-731-1481 or Wayne County Crime Stoppers at 919-735-5555.

Regardless of what the truth turns out to be, surprised WRAL reporting her name. They are disclosing the name of a possible sexual assault victim. (Assume the perp already would have her personal information from car and purse.)

Check out the story on the front page of the Roanoke Rapids Daily Herald, little more details, somewhat better than this story.

If you're on the way home from work and you know your husband is waiting for you, why would you pick up a stranger off the highway? Was she passed out on the side of the highway or knocked out by the man that assaulted her? It seems kinda strange that he would assault her and then just jump out of the car and leave her, knowing she is gonna call the cops and identify him. I think there is more to the story...

The guy was missing a front tooth, etc. I find it very difficult to believe that she didn't realize that she didn't know the guy until he was in the car................. 99% of people who I know well enough to let into my car, I can tell who they are by a combination of appearance, clothing, and how they walk. Not saying it was the case, but she was probably trying to do something she had no business, i.e. drugs

I don't buy the story that she thought she knew the person, and he got in her car before she realized it wasn't someone she knew. She would have recognized this long before he got to her car door. I'm theorizing here, but I'll bet she was trying to buy or sell a product or service to the guy and he jumped in the car.

so because shes a thief that writes worthless checks, she's unable to get assaulted by a stranger? interesting speculation...
