Woman offers hugs and smiles to cancer patients

Posted January 17

— A 92-year-old woman is spreading joy and hope across the Triangle to those who need it most in the new year.

Polly Williams has spent the past 19 years volunteering for cancer patients at Rex Hospital.

Patients describe Polly as a healer with a medicine bag full of smiles, comforting words and hugs.

"This is my life," Williams said. "This is what I want to do."

Williams has logged 20,000 volunteer hours at the hospital and said she has enjoyed every minute.

It's a nice gesture, but I'm sure the terminally ill get plenty of hugs.

When you are going through Chemo, sometimes a smile makes all of the difference in the world between a bad day and a " i want to end the pain" day. Don't discount what she does. It's needed, necessary and more than welcome.

Ms. Polly will offer you coffee, tea and hot chocolate. She will apologize and tell you that no, they do not have alcohol! She is a wonderful human being and I do not know what we would have done without her beautiful smile!! Sending Lots of Love her way!!
