RAEFORD, N.C. — Hoke County authorities arrested and charged a man with murder after he allegedly killed a woman at his home early Tuesday morning.

Sheriff Hubert Peterkin said Timothy Tyler twice shot Alisa Hammonds, 50, during an argument at his home, at 659 Gainey Road, around 4:30 a.m.

Tyler was being held without bond Tuesday afternoon at the Hoke County Detention Center.

Peterkin said Hammonds had been visiting and that she and Tyler were arguing over money that was reportedly stolen from him.

"The suspect pulled a .22 rifle, from what I understand, and fired several shots. The investigation shows that there were shots missed. They found them in the ceiling. They found them in the wall," Peterkin said. "It appears that she took a head shot, which led to her death."

Tyler's friends and relatives said he awoke to find Hammonds in his home going through his wallet and thought that he was being robbed, but Peterkin said the two knew one another – although he did not say how – and that she had been at Tyler's home before he went to sleep.

"He knows her. That's not the first time she's been there," Peterkin said. "The way these people are telling you, it sounds like a robbery – absolutely not."
