Woman killed in Raleigh crash

Posted May 22, 2013

— A woman was killed Wednesday morning in a wreck involving a school bus and a car, Raleigh police said.

Police said a 2005 Dodge driven by Lana Awni Almashini, 25, of Flint Ridge Place in Raleigh, turned left on Atlantic Avenue and collided with a Wake County school bus driven by Octavius Lamar Smith, 22.

The impact pushed the car about 85 feet. Almashini died of her injuries, police said.

No students were on the bus at the time of the wreck.

Officers closed Atlantic Avenue between Spring Forest and Millbrook roads in north Raleigh for about four hours following the wreck.

This is a shame. Hard to imagine how you could fail to see something as big as a bus, but people seem to collide with them quite frequently.

LocalYokel - How can you turn police responding to a fatal car accident into a comment about Raleigh PD failing to serve and protect?

  • HDStreetGlide May 23, 2013

@ LocalYokel, do you not understand RPD have to investigate the accident involving a death by motor vehicle. How are they safety to do this?? It's called block off road so no other accidents happen and they can safety do their job, which they did They served and they protected.

almost sounds like she turned into the bus somehow. It was a sad day for loved ones in this case.

  • STRAWBERRY LETTER 23 May 22, 2013

This was reported as a fatality early this morning. They initially said the bus hit the car and then they said the car hit the bus. I guess BOTH are correct.

So sad. I'm sure a family is really grieving tonight.

was not reported as a fatality earlier because they wanted to notify family firsts. How would you like hearing about the loss of a love one on a news report?

@Obamacare survives I think I saw you....if you were holding a coffee tray from the gas station right there.

Localyokel, since the police are not there to protect and serve, try calling your accountant the next time you need help. Maybe he/she can do a better job for you.

I listen to WPTF in the morning while getting ready. They reported it as a fatality before I left @ 7 a.m. I normally drive Litchford/Atlantic, so I detoured around it. Three hours later WRAL still is not listing it as a fatality.

@localyokel, the picture shows RPD responding to a crash, where somone reportedly died. Where do you gather that a crime was commited??? there could have been, but just as easily not. Hundreds of cops, hundreds of thousands of drivers. What do you want? Sounds like you're either a cop hater, government hater, or just some old crotchety complainer who's never happy about anything. Either way, until you have something provable to say you should probably just cork it. I bet you'd be glad to see a blue and white if you needed help, but you'd probably complain that they didn't get there fast enough due to policing driving "crimes" before they happened. SMH
