— A woman was killed Wednesday morning in a wreck on westbound Interstate 40 in Johnston County, authorities said.

The wreck involving a tractor-trailer and a vehicle occurred shortly before 9 a.m. near the N.C. Highway 42 exit off I-40, authorities said.

Leydy Margarita Romero Hernandez, 23, of Apex, was eastbound on I-40 when she crossed the highway median and collided head-on with a westbound tractor-trailer, authorities said. She died at the scene. The truck driver wasn't injured.

Authorities said they don't believe speed or alcohol were factors in the wreck, which remains under investigation.

    "Are you serious?"

you and the other wal-mart employees dont account for an abundance of traffic.

It really needs to be six lanes (at least) all the way from Exit 312 (40/42) to 440. Another possible improvement, which I've heard discussed, is adding an exit at Cornwallis Road, which would be like Exit 313.

    Prayers to the deceased's family.

We live in the Cleveland School area and there is another surge of traffic, a mini-rush hour, between about 8:30 to 9am as many of the parents drop kids off at the three/four elementary schools in the area and then head to work. I am so sorry for this person and his or her family. There are many accidents in the 4042 exchange area, there is so much traffic all the time now, and the 70 Bypass traffic contributes greatly to the headache since it bottlenecks. Our local EMS workers do a great job though, from all stations that respond to this area. They are kept busy. I hope the NCDOT might decide to re-evaluate the timeline for the expansion of lanes from this area to the beltline. The bypass has beautiful scenery, and it is admirable that they were careful to leave a minimal environmental impact. But the bottleneck needs to be fixed, asap.

    "It is?"

Who leaves for work at 9AM?

  • Bob Sidel Oct 7, 2009

I drive it everyday at 7:30 and have at 9 am as well, I've gotten to Raleigh in 15 minutes driving at 9am. Neither times are outrageously congested unless there is an accident on I-40.

To Bob and Kristie who obviously don't drive that stretch of highway at that time of day - The rush hour traffic is NOT clear by 9 AM although technically you could say "rush hour" is over. The 70 Bypass although 3 miles away from the accident slows traffic for more than 5 miles along this corridor of I-40. Come drive it one morning @ 9 AM if you want the experience!

    It is?

"Rush hour traffic is clear by the time this accident happened..."

I drove right by this accident right after it happened. The car didn't look in too good of shape and they had the windshield covered with a tarp so I suspected someone had died. So sad. My prayers are with the family of the deceased.

Rush hour traffic is clear by the time this accident happened. Same old stuff, people wanting to blame everything and everyone around them for things that go wrong. One of the drivers obviously made a deadly mistake, so stop trying to blame a road 3 miles west of where it happened.
