Woman killed by train in Raleigh

A Norfolk Southern freight train hit and killed a Raleigh woman who was lying on the tracks Monday night, according to a company spokesperson.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A Norfolk Southern freight train hit and killed a Raleigh woman who was lying on the tracks Monday night, according to a company spokesperson.

Rebecca Smith Vasquez, 51, was declared dead at the scene, police said. The preliminary investigation did not indicate signs of foul play.

Emergency crews were called to the railroad, near Carolina Pines Avenue, at 10:11 p.m., according to Norfolk Southern spokesperson Robin Chapman.
