ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — A woman whose car had broken down was walking for help on Interstate 95 northbound early Saturday when she was hit and killed.

Troopers said Symanthia McWilliams Pierce, 43, of Roanoke Rapids, had recently left work and was headed north near mile marker 171 when she encountered car trouble. She crossed the highway and was walking on the exit ramp from southbound I-95 when a pickup truck struck her.

The exit ramp to North Carolina Highway 125 was closed for about an hour at 1 a.m.

Troopers do not expect to file charges against the driver of the truck.
