CHATHAM COUNTY, N.C. — A Chatham County woman is facing drunken-driving charges after authorities say she hit and killed a pedestrian during the Fourth of July weekend.

Emily Cheek, 21, was driving on White Smith Road around 6:30 a.m. on July 5 when she hit Julie Haarhuis, 41.

Haarhuis died Saturday at a local hospital.

Her husband says the two had only been married a year-and-a-half. He says his wife was taking a morning walk when she was hit.

State troopers plan to charge Cheek with driving while impaired and felony death-by-motor vehicle.
