SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A 92-year-old Smithfield woman died Thursday in a head-on collision that closed southbound lanes of Interstate 95.

Nellie Green was driving north in the southbound lanes near milemarker 96, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. They did not offer a reason why Green got onto the highway headed the wrong way.

Eve Goldman, who was headed south, was unable to avoid Green and the two collided just after noon. Authorities closed the highway for about an hour while they cleared the wreck.

Green died in an ambulance on the way to the hospital. Goldman was injured but is expected to make a full recovery, troopers said.
