Woman Dies in Collision With Prison Bus

Posted April 2, 2008

— A Wallace woman was killed Tuesday morning when her car collided with a bus carrying an inmate work crew, authorities said.

Sheila Raynor Parker, 48, was southbound on N.C. Highway 11 shortly before 8:30 a.m. Tuesday when her car crossed the center line about 4 miles north of Wallace and hit the bus, said Sgt. Joel Stiles, of the state Highway Patrol.

The bus was carrying an inmate work crew from Pender Correctional Institution, in Burgaw, to a state Department of Transportation depot in Kenansville, authorities said.

The bus wound up in a ditch after the wreck, and five inmates and one correctional officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
