Woman Dies After Car Hit by Train in Durham
A Durham woman died after the car she was driving was struck by a train on Driver Street near Angier Avenue late Wednesday morning.
Posted — UpdatedDURHAM, N.C. — A Durham woman died after the car she was driving was struck by a train on Driver Street, near Angier Avenue late Wednesday morning.
Almildred Perry, 78, of Durham, died after she was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment.
The railroad crossing arms were down when the accident happened at 11:27 a.m.
A car in front of Perry went around the arms and crossed the tracks safely, but the front of a westbound Norfolk Southern train struck the right passenger side of her 1986 Oldsmobile, knocking it approximately 70 feet.
The train’s speed was estimated at approximately 47 miles per hour. The engineer blew the train’s horn several times before entering the intersection, according to witnesses.
No one in the train was injured.
The accident blocked the tracks for at least an hour. No charges have been filed, but the accident remained under investigation.
