ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — A Roanoke Rapids woman has been charged with child abuse for allegedly leaving young children alone in a motel room, according to the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.

Deputy Josh Clark approached Shanelle Lashone Edmonds, 26, after seeing her "very intoxicated" in the parking lot of a motel, Maj. Bruce Temple said in a release. He said that Clark found that Edmonds had left the children unattended in a motel room "that was in disorder and an unhealthy environment."

The children were placed in the custody of social services.

Edmonds was charged with two counts each of child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. She was placed in the Halifax County jail under a $5,000 bond and scheduled to appear in court July 28.
