Woman charged in boy's beating death

Posted October 24, 2008

— A Sanford woman was charged early Friday with killing a 3-year-old boy in her care, police said.

Ebony Lashaun Watson, 22, was charged with murder, felony assault inflicting serious injury and felony child abuse. She was being held without bond in the Lee County Jail.

The unidentified boy was taken to Central Carolina Hospital at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday, police said. He was transferred to UNC Hospitals, in Chapel Hill, and was in cardiac arrest upon arrival.

The boy underwent three hours of surgery, but doctors said he suffered from massive internal injuries that were the result of an assault, police said. He died shortly after midnight.

Watson was the girlfriend of the boy's father, Eddie Pugh, and she was left in charge of the child. Pugh, Watson and the boy lived at the Regal Inn, 3200 Jefferson Highway.

Watson had someone call 911 from the Regal Inn Thursday, reporting the child was choking, police said. After the boy died, she told investigators that she injured him, police said.

She deserves the chair. Any adult who hurts or murders a child has demonstrated they are unfit to walk the earth.

So sorry to heat about to hear about a young life taken so soon. I'm wondering why were they were living in a hotel, no place to bring a child up. She dont need to sit in jail and wait for a trial...she said that she hurt the child so justice needs to be as fast as possible, don't bother giving her a lawyer. Where was his father? will he be chaged with something as well?

It is a travesty that such a young person's life was taken and in such a horrible way. I hope that the boy's father can forgive his poor judgement and that his family will be there to support him emotionally, mentally and spritually.

As far as all the banter going on with ejohannaf
if all will take notice they just joined today and they are getting way too much attention. Which I suspect might be just what they are after. Someone who is intelligent does not have to keep repeating it to others, it is usually self-evident.

My prayers are with the poor little boy and his family & friends. I hope the woman that killed him gets help but also that she pays the FULL price for actions.

    Peace to all!

to all who reads this message that little boy was a precious little boy whos father abused him as well he moved him away from his REAL mother and never let her see him or anything else. He was told about his girlfriends abusive behavior. She actually had 4 children of her own. He was probably out dealing or doing drugs I know this young boy and his Father.

Rev RB, you're too kind on the 25 year in prison, and a better person than I. I cannot tolerate anyone who inflicts intentional harm/abuse on a defenseless child, there is no excuse, it turns my stomach. When I read about murders like this, I feel it's time to reinstate public hangings at the courthouse. Breaks my heart that a toddler had to endure this...

Did we ever find out what happened to the boy who was tied to the tree during the hot, hazy, smoke filled days this past summer? Were there ever any charges brought against the parents?

ejohannaf - "personal attacks are lame" - true enough, so why did you call us, or someone, ignorant? Ignorance would be talking about something for which you have no first hand experience, and "highly educated" doesn't necessarily translate to "wise". Not a personal attack, but wisdom can't be taught in college. That only comes from the school of hard knocks. And it is up to the individual to choose to learn from those hard lessons. No one can make someone learn no matter how we may "fix" their situation. Some people are just evil, and don't care. Another poster talked about their mother, but they learned right from wrong anyway - you have to WANT to be good!

I think I understand what you are trying to get at, but in this case I think its just a terrible person that did a terrible thing to an innocent child. She could have chosen to just leave the child alone at the hotel if she couldn't be around him anymore, but yet she didn't, she thought it was a better idea to beat the life out of him instead. That has nothing to do with society or anything else in my opinion. There is ALWAYS a different choice one can make in any situation.
There is no place in any society for any person that would do something like this! I don't care what happened to them in the past.
