Woman celebrates 102nd birthday with a workout

— A very special birthday celebration in Kakaako Thursday for Emi Hata, who will turn 102 Saturday.

Hata is celebrating by doing what she does every week... working out

"You can't come in here and not be motivated by that," Kristin Pereira, who is inspired by Hata said.

Hata started her gym routine, after she began having issues with arthritis.

Speaking through her daughter, who serves as her interpreter, Hata tells us why she keeps coming back.

"She says it's for her health, she comes, she keeps coming cause she know's it's good for her health," Akemi Simon, Hata's daughter said.

Emi goes to Kakaako Fitness weekly.

She recently bumped her sessions up to twice a week. She has been working out together with her trainer, Pat Kamida, for over 20 years.

"We laugh so much during our session, she has a wonderful sense of humor," Kamida said.

And the sessions aren't easy.

Hata works her back, lats, triceps, shoulders, and yes, the centenarian never skips "leg day".

So what does this mean for those nearly a quarter of her age?

"Well, it's a reality check that I should probably be working harder because if she's out here, over 100 years old, what am I complaining about?" Pereira said.

"Seeing her here, it blows my mind," Noel Manaday, another person inspired by Hata said.

Mind blowing? She doesn't think so.

She tells Island News she's just doing what she has done for years and listens to what her trainer Pat tells her to do.

Even if those directions leave her a bit frustrated.

"I see Pat do this and she tells me to do this but when I do this, it doesn't look the same. She [Hata] gets all like, I don't know why it doesn't look the same," Simon said.

Hata says she'll keep trying, till her body tells her she can't do it anymore.
