NEW HILL, N.C. — A woman and her son were rescued Monday night from the Deep River in Chatham County after their canoe capsized.

They were not seriously hurt, but the woman was taken to the hospital with breathing problems.

The boy's father was also in the canoe when it overturned, but he was able to swim to shore. The mother and boy became stranded on some rocks in the river.

Water rescue crews from Chatham and Lee counties responded to the scene, off U.S. Highway 1 near Pea Ridge Road, around 7 p.m. The mother and son were pulled from the water shortly before 10:30 p.m.
