— A woman and her son were rescued Monday night from the Deep River in Chatham County after their canoe capsized.

They were not seriously hurt, but the woman was taken to the hospital with breathing problems.

The boy's father was also in the canoe when it overturned, but he was able to swim to shore. The mother and boy became stranded on some rocks in the river.

Water rescue crews from Chatham and Lee counties responded to the scene, off U.S. Highway 1 near Pea Ridge Road, around 7 p.m. The mother and son were pulled from the water shortly before 10:30 p.m.

Point taken beachbum1, but some people just want to find a way to fault a victim. I assume at least the kid was wearing one and that's why he is alive. The next comment after yours wants to charge for the rescue and thinks everyone should stay out of the water. Seriously?! Do we need to weaken our society even more by never getting off the couch?!

    Where were their PFDs?

These people should be held responsible for the cost of the rescue. Stay out of the water people, it's not safe.

You don't think people should be allowed to canoe, boat, swim, raft etc. etc. etc? Why? What are you, aquaphobic?

It's a good reminder to those that don't think about putting one on.

Hmm - rescue crews arrive at the scene at 7:00 pm and 3.5 hours later the woman and boy are pulled from the rocks? That must have been a very complex rescue.

Life vests are great, but why does that matter in this case? So you can judge them?
