COROLLA, N.C. — A Kitty Hawk woman was sentenced Wednesday to prison for embezzling more than $860,000 from the homeowners association of an Outer Banks community.

Alisha Bittle, 45, was sentenced to nearly three years in prison and ordered to pay $861,819.42 in restitution. She had pleaded guilty in April to one count of fraudulent use of access devices.

Bittle was property manager for the Buck Island Homeowner's Association in Corolla from 2000 to 2008. Prosecutors said that starting in 2003, she embezzled dues to pay for personal expenses by issuing checks to herself or other businesses, using the HOA's business credit card and withdrawing money from the HOA's bank account.

The case was investigated by the Currituck County Sheriff's Office and Federal Bureau of Investigation.
