FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. — A 90-year-old woman injured in a fire early Wednesday at Hillcrest Village apartments in Fuquay-Varina has died.

Authorities said Doris Clay had burns to her face and went into cardiac arrest. Paramedics treated her at the scene before taking her to WakeMed. She was later transferred to UNC Hospitals.

Neighbors said Clay lived in the apartment with her grandson, who knocked on their door for help.

Town spokeswoman Susan Weis said someone called 911 about 4:15 a.m. to report the fire.

She said Clay's grandson was able to get out of the apartment on his own and was unhurt. Clay was rescued by firefighters, authorities said.

Firefighters think the blaze began in the bedroom, where they found discarded smoking materials around Clay's bed.
