Woman, 90, dies after Fuquay-Varina apartment fire

Posted June 4, 2014

— A 90-year-old woman injured in a fire early Wednesday at Hillcrest Village apartments in Fuquay-Varina has died.

Authorities said Doris Clay had burns to her face and went into cardiac arrest. Paramedics treated her at the scene before taking her to WakeMed. She was later transferred to UNC Hospitals.

Neighbors said Clay lived in the apartment with her grandson, who knocked on their door for help.

Town spokeswoman Susan Weis said someone called 911 about 4:15 a.m. to report the fire.

She said Clay's grandson was able to get out of the apartment on his own and was unhurt. Clay was rescued by firefighters, authorities said.

Firefighters think the blaze began in the bedroom, where they found discarded smoking materials around Clay's bed.

She lived a long and lengthy life at the age of 90. May God continue to bless all of you. My condolences to the family and many friends.

    When scubagirl2 (and Naysayer

ABC11 reported that the grandmother was a heavy smoker. I hope the grandson does not have too much guilt. I am sure he did everything he could to save her.

I don't think I could live with myself after leaving my grandmother in a burning house.

When Scubagirl posted her sentiments, it hadn't yet been reported that the woman had passed away.

The grandson could have been the smoker, don't forget he lived there as well. Doesn't say WHO the smoker was, could have been either of them or both of them. Regardless very sad.

Where does it say she was a heavy smoker, or even that the "discarded smoking materials" found were hers?

Awww, God...terrible way to die. Prayers for her loved ones.

Well, it looks like smoking killed her but not in the way everybody expected. A heavy smoker who lived to be 90, that really hurts the anti-smoking campaign. Prayers for her family.
