— A man died Wednesday night of injuries suffered when he jumped from the Interstate 540 overpass onto Interstate 40 in Durham, police said.

Kammie Michael, spokeswoman for the Durham Police Department, said several people called 911 on Durham Wednesday afternoon to report that they saw the man jump.

Police found him in an eastbound lane of I-40 just after 4 p.m.

Traffic on I-40 at Page Road was reduced to one lane while emergency responders treated the man.

So sorry for this young man's family and friends. This is such a difficult thing to go through.

If you're going to jump from a bridge, make sure its high enough that you kill yourself on impact. No one wants to give CPR to a mangled yet still-alive person with blood oozing out of every orifice.

It is sad what he done to himself, but I am also glad no other person hit him or had a wreck trying to avoid him.

Suicides do not increase around Christmas. It's widely believed, but false.

    You can not be serious.

Before emergency responders arrived people were there giving this man CPR - my mom called me upset watching this go down - hopefully this man will get the help he needs. I am 100% sure he was not jumping to take a shortcut.

    What?
He jumped from the highest spot on the 540 bridge exit, without landing on a car below. He left his car up on the entrance ramp. Are you saying he was too lazy to walk back down, so he tried to jump off the overpass?

If he really wanted to die, he would have jumped from one bridge. It seems to me he didn't want to walk all the way around. So he decided to take a short cut and jump from one bridge to the other.

Sadly, I was thinking the same thing. We had a bridge jumper Monday in Gloucester VA.
