WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A North Carolina police officer wounded in a shootout last week died from his injuries on Monday.

Sgt. Mickey Hutchens, 50, was shot in the face during a shootout Oct. 7 that left a suspect dead and another police officer wounded.

Winston-Salem spokesman Ed McNeal said Officer Daniel Clark was released from the hospital Friday. The 28-year-old officer was hit with two bullets.

The officers had chased Monte Denard Evans from a restaurant where the 35-year-old had come to confront his former wife. Evans was killed in the shootout.

Hutchens' condition began to deteriorate over the weekend, city officials said.

Hutchens, who was with the Winston-Salem Police Department for 27 years, is survived by his wife and their two daughters.

Funeral arrangements were pending.
