WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem announced Wednesday that it would cut the equivalent of about 950 jobs by June 2013 in an effort to control costs.

The cuts will be about half from positions currently unfilled and half from the elimination of current employees, the hospital said. The reduction represents about 6 percent of the center's workforce.

The cuts began when 76 Wake Forest Baptist employees were laid off this week. They come after reductions in expense and discretionary budgets were not enough to meet the hospital goals. Almost two-thirds of the center's costs are labor, the hospital said.
