ROCKWELL, N.C. — Someone who purchased a Mega Millions ticket in Rowan County on Friday has won $3 million after missing the big jackpot by one number, lottery officials said.

The ticket is the largest non-jackpot prize ever won in the state. Mega Millions is played in 43 states, Washington, D.C., and the Virgin Islands.

The lucky ticket was purchased at a Kangaroo Express on East Main Street in Rockwell. The player matched all five white balls but didn’t score the gold Mega Ball. That would have been worth $181 million – or nearly $99 million if taken as a lump sum – lottery officials said.

The game has changed a bit since October, with a new number matrix, bigger starting jackpots and bigger prizes for matching all five white balls. Lottery officials said under the old rules, the winning ticket would have been worth $750,000.

The winner has 180 days to claim the prize – a total of $2.04 million after taxes – at lottery headquarters in Raleigh.

The jackpot for Tuesday’s drawing is now $205 million.
