Longtime owner Nancy Olson plans to sell her popular independent Raleigh bookstore, Quail Ridge Books & Music, and retire.

And the busy month at Quail Ridge Books & Music in Raleigh continues (read my earlier post about Tuesday's Lego program)!

The Raleigh book store will host the following events in the next week or so (with descriptions courtesy of Quail Ridge):

  • 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Saturday. The Wimpy Kid 8 Hard Luck Truck will make a stop in the store's parking lot. Get free Wimpy Kid goodies, see Wimpy Kid book trailers, get your photo taken and emailed or texted to you, and preorder Book 8 and buy Wimpy Kid backlist books. A big note: Author Jeff Kinney will not be appearing with the Book 8 mobile. The Wimpy Kid 8 book comes out Nov. 5.
  • 7 p.m., Sept. 23. D.J. MacHale, author of such popular series as Pendragon, Travelers, and Morpheus Road, presents the first in a thrilling trilogy, Sylo (Penguin $17.99). From Kirkus Reviews: “This first installment in a proposed trilogy is absolutely un-put-down-able, more exciting than an X-Box and roller coaster combined.” If you're into government conspiracy novels, this is for you. Ages 9 and up.
  • 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Sept. 26, NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar makes a stop with his book. Abdul-Jabbar begins a sports-oriented series with a message and a mystery. He visits with Sasquatch in the Paint (Hyperion $16.99), first in the Streetball Crew series. This is a signing line ticket event, which means that you'll receive a ticket with purchase of Sasquatch from Quail Ridge. He won't be signing memorabilia. The book is best for kids ages 8 and up.  (Note the time update ... it originally was to end at 6:30 p.m.).

Some more about the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar event, which is expected to be very popular: He'll do a brief program, according to Quail Ridge, and then start signing. He will personalize books and photography is allowed though there won't be time for posed pictures. And if you really want to make sure you get your booked signed by him, it's best to buy your book from Quail Ridge sooner than later. The earlier you buy a book, the earlier your signing line time will be. The store may have to cut off signing line tickets if they extend past his time window.

Quail Ridge Books & Music is on Wade Avenue in Raleigh.
