Wilson Police ID Victim in Officer-Involved Shooting

Police shot Jarvis Barnes, 25, of Pinetops, after he failed to comply with police commands, authorities said.

WILSON, N.C. — Authorities on Tuesday identified a man who an officer killed Monday morning while police were responding to reports of gunshots in Wilson.

Jarvis Barnes, 25, of Rural Route 4, Lot 14 in Pinetops, was killed after he confronted officers with a gun. After Barnes failed to comply with several police commands, an officer shot him, Wilson police said.

The three officers at the scene – Sgt. R. Weatherford, officer J. Wellman and officer A. McNair – have been placed on administrative leave while the State Bureau of Investigation reviews the case. It was unclear which officer shot Barnes, police reported. They did not say how many guns were discharged.

Police said they believed Barnes forcefully entered the home of Vernon Cox, 41, of 110 Ash St. in Wilson, at about 4 a.m. and chased Cox from his house to the porch of 120 Narrow Way, where Barnes shot him..

Investigators said they do not have a motive for the shooting.

Cox was transported to the Wilson Medical Center and then to Pitt Memorial Hospital, where his condition was not available Tuesday.
