Wilson man, daughter hospitalized after DWI crash
A Wilson County man and his 10-year-old daughter remained hospitalized Monday afternoon after a wreck three days ago in which authorities say he was driving while impaired.
Posted — UpdatedWalter Thomas McKeel, 42, of Stantonsburg, was charged with DWI, misdemeanor child abuse and failure to maintain lane control after his car overturned several times Friday afternoon and landed against the tree line on the right side of Lizard Lick Road near Wendell.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said McKeel told troopers that he looked back to talk to his daughter, lost control and ran off the road.
"He was on some type of prescription medication and had possibly taken too much," Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Michael Baker said.
Court records show McKeel was also arrested in April on charges of DWI and misdemeanor child abuse.
In that case, a witness said he was turning into a parking lot on Leesville Road when he rear-ended two other vehicles.
McKeel's license was suspended for 30 days, and he was able to reapply.
Court records show his court date on the charges has been continued at least five times and that his latest trial date is set for Jan. 23.
