WILSON, N.C. — The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is working to identify the car and driver that killed a man riding a moped about a mile from his Wilson County home early Friday morning.

Troopers found the front bumper and grill of a car that appears to be a silver Chrysler 300 or 300M sedan at the scene of the collision.

A passing motorist called 911 a couple minutes after midnight to report finding the trashed moped and pieces of the car along N.C. Highway 42.

Only later did emergency personnel find Hugh Bolton Johnston, 58, of 3042 N.C. 42 East. Troopers estimated the impact threw Johnston about 175 feet.

Johnston was taken to an area hospital where he died.

"This person took all of our hopes and our dreams," said Lynn Barnes, Johnston's fiancee. The two planned to marry in the fall.

Sonia Barnes said Johnston was good for her mother.

"Now I feel nothing but a hole," Lynn Barnes said. "I miss him so much."

Troopers asked that anyone with information about this crash call the North Carolina State Highway Patrol at 1-800-662-7956, 252-237-5294, or *47 on any cellular phone. Information can also be reported by calling 911 in Wilson County.
