No people, homes threatened by Hyde wildfire; 30 miles of US 264 shut down
A large forest fire in Hyde County has grown to nearly 10,000 acres and has forced authorities to shut down U.S. Highway 264 near the Dare County line.

Despite its size, the fire is in an undeveloped area where no people or communities are threatened, according to the North Carolina Forestry Service.
The Whipping Creek fire started at about 2 p.m. Monday when two small fires broke out on private land near the Hyde-Dare line, according to the North Carolina Forestry Service.
The two fires merged in the evening and grew to more than 200 acres before nightfall, and the fire has continued to grow in the last 48 hours.
Fire crews are working to plow a fire line from U.S. 264 to Whipping Creek Road and establish lines on the north and east sides of the fire. Crews from local fire departments and officials from local wildlife refuges and the N.C. Forest Service are helping fight the blaze.
Drivers headed east on U.S. 264 will take northbound N.C. Highway 94 to Columbia and then eastbound U.S. 64 to get around the fire.
