RALEIGH, N.C. — A widespread power outage was reported in Orange and Durham counties on Friday night.

Duke Energy had 6,000 customers without power just before 7 p.m. That number decreased to 1,900 customers by 10 p.m.

Duke officials said the outage was caused by a tree hitting a transmission line. Crews were on the scene making repairs, but there was no estimation of when service would be restored.

Piedmont Power customers also reported power outages on Friday night. There was no word on what caused those outages.
