Waldo hides at a Raleigh business

Waldo, the bespectacled star of the popular search-and-find book series, is hiding out in businesses across Durham and Raleigh as part of an annual event to encourage visits to locally owned businesses and stir up some excitement for the books.

In Raleigh, through the end of the month, you'll be able to find small cardboard cutouts of the character at more than two dozen spots across Raleigh, including kid-friendly haunts such as Quail Ridge Books, Read With Me, Marbles Kids Museum and the Cupcake Shoppe. You can pick up a Waldo Passport at a participating business or find it online on Quail Ridge's website and print it out.

Then, look for Waldo at the participating businesses and get a stamp each time you find him. At Quail Ridge, you'll get a $1 coupon, which is good on a Where's Waldo book. Quail Ridge also will host a Waldo grand celebration at 2 p.m., July 30. If you've collected 10 or more stamps, you'll get entered into a prize drawing.

And in Durham, through the end of the month, you can find Waldo hiding in nearly 40 different locally owned businesses. It works the same way - print out the passport from Sustain-A-Bull's website, find Waldo in each business, get your passport stamped and enter to win raffle prizes. Durham businesses include kid-friendly favorites such as The Mad Popper, Locopops, Bull City Craft, Playhouse Toy Store and more.

My kids and I do this every year and have a lot of fun. Great summer activity!
