Are you a fan of the 1965 classic “The Sound of Music”? It’s hard to believe that the seminal musical is 52 years old! If you’re wondering what ever happened to the Von Trapp children and other favorite characters, wonder no more. Read on to find out what some of the cast of “The Sound of Music” is up to today.
Julie Andrews (Maria)
Every kid wanted their very own governess after watching Julie Andrews as Maria in “The Sound of Music.” Andrews charmed everyone as the nun turned nanny, singing her way into our hearts. Andrews went on to have a very prolific career and most recently has lent her beautiful voice to a slew of children’s animated films, including the “Shrek” movies and “Despicable Me 3.”
Christopher Plummer (Captain Von Trapp)
Growing up, I was in awe of Plummer as the stern but ultimately benevolent father of the Von Trapp children. The handsome actor went on to win several awards for his work, including an Academy Award, two Emmys, two Tonys, a Golden Globe, a SAG Award and a BAFTA Award. At the age of 82, Plummer won an Oscar in 2012 for his role in “Beginners,” making him the oldest actor to ever win an Academy Award.
Eleanor Parker (The Baroness)
Parker was pure icy glamour in her role as the baroness and Captain Von Trapp’s original love interest. Parker continued to act into the 1990s, appearing in TV classics such as “The Love Boat” and “Hawaii 5-0.” She passed away in 2013 at the age of 91.
Charmian Carr (Liesel Von Trapp)
My mom first introduced me to the “The Sound of Music” when I was a little girl. And, I wanted to be just like Liesel. She was beautiful, talented and had a hunky older boyfriend. What more could a girl want? Although Carr mostly stayed out of the spotlight after starring as Liesel, she wrote a book, “Forever Liesel: A Memoir of The Sound of Music,” about her experiences filming the iconic movie. She passed away in 2016 at the age of 73.
Daniel Truhitte (Rolfe)
Speaking of that hunky boyfriend, Truhitte was the handsome Rolfe, the soldier who serenades Liesel. In 2010, most of the cast reunited on “Oprah” to celebrate the film’s 45th anniversary. Truhitte was upset that he wasn’t included in the reunion, reportedly telling TMZ at the time, “I was the male juvenile lead, a main part of the story. It’s beyond me.” For her part, a rep for Oprah said the reunion was meant to be for the Von Trapp family, of which Truhitte was not a part.

Heather Menzies-Urich as Louisa Von Trapp
In her role as Louisa, Menzies-Urich played a naughty child determined to make Maria’s life a living nightmare. Of course until she learned to love her. Urich stayed in the entertainment business for some time. She appeared in the TV show “Logan’s Run” and posed for Playboy in 1973. Regarding her fellow cast mates in “The Sound of Music,” Menzies-Urich told Desert News in 2012, “We’ve never lost touch.”
Nicholas Hammond (Friedrich Von Trapp)
Of course, Hammond sure was cute as Friedrich, and his Hollywood good looks kept him in the limelight. Hammond went on to star in several TV shows and movies. He had roles in “Dallas” and as Peter Parker in 1979’s “The Amazing Spider-Man.”
