When do kids go trick-or-treating? Some guidance

Posted October 27, 2013

Many parents choose to take their kids to the mall to trick or treat.

When do kids go trick-or-treating around here?

I haven't gotten that question from as many readers this year as I have in past years. The issue usually comes up when Oct. 31 falls on a Sunday and a few communities around here actually move the date of the holiday. But that's not an issue this year.

But I have gotten a few, often from people with young children who are trick-or-treating for the very first time or newcomers to the area. And judging by how prominently some communities post their recommended trick-or-treating hours on their website, it's definitely a hot topic.

Some towns and cities around here do recommend specific trick-or-treating hours. Some leave it up to the parents to figure it out and don't say anything about Halloween at all.

Here's what I know. You'll see a trend pretty quickly. If you want to go door-to-door trick-or-treating, the day to go is Oct. 31. And the hours to go are generally between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Apex: Historically, kids in Apex trick or treat on Oct. 31. The town does not officially set this date, or take a position on what day any holiday is celebrated. The town suggests that all trick-or-treating is done by 9 p.m.

Just a request from a parent of a teen to be kind to all ages out trick-or-treating tonight :-)

My rule on Halloween is to give a treat to anyone dressed up in a costume.

Why there is ever a question is beyond me. Halloween is October 31st. Look at every calendar...it states it quite clearly. It is October 31st.
