When city meets country

Posted — UpdatedGrowing up on the farm, I got to experience things city kids did not. Things like petting a day-old calf (I was 2 ½ in this picture) or hatching chickens, ducks and geese in an incubator.
I do what I can to share those experiences with my kids. Every year we go back to the farm in Missouri for a week or so. One of my kids gets to go a week and a half early for more intense farm-time with my mom and dad.
I don’t quite know how to explain it, but I feel like growing up in the country made me more real. I don’t know if it was dealing with life and death on a regular basis, the hard work, growing our own food, being closer to nature or what, but it made me who I am today.
Everything seems so fast-paced, superficial and technologically advanced, I find myself longing for the simple life of my youth. I wish I could send my kids back in time so they could experience it for themselves.
