What to buy in December and what to wait on

Posted December 8, 2014

December is a great time to buy products including toys and gift cards, but not such a good time for a number of other items. Read on for a list of what products are good deals in December and those that are not.

What to buy in December

Toys - according to RetailMeNot.com The top toy deals are usually about 10 days before Christmas.

Champagne – with New Years coming up, stores price Champagne low as a loss leader to get folks in the door hoping they will stock up on other non-sale items.

Baking supplies – there are fabulous deals on all your holiday baking ingredients now. Stock up with coupons for the coming months and use the deal lists on the Smart Shopper blog each week to see the very best deals for these baking and cooking products.

Gift card promotions – Check out my weekly list of stores offering discounted gift cards or rewards when you buy specific retail and restaurant gift cards.

Christmas decor (AFTER 12/25) – hit those clearance sales for 75 – 90% off décor, candy, wrapping paper, cards, toys and more!

Swimming Pools – there is pretty much no demand for pools in December, so if you are thinking of getting a pool now is the time to find some of the best discounts.

Laptops & tablets - back to school is the best time (August and September)

Furniture - save 30 percent more in January

Winter sporting goods - wait for end of season clearance

Target toy clearance in January with deals 75 percent off!

WOW! I see some folks that Santa is going to be skipping by. Faye does a great job of helping folks make good choices for spending their money. If you do not want to save money, you are not required to read her columns. WOW! Shame on you!

Caveman93-Smartshopper is trying to help people save as much money as they can and not fall for the gimmicks that perhaps normally they might fall for. If someone is in the market for a computer or tv, it's nice that they can see this list and know when to buy those items to save as much of their hard earned money as possible. I, for one, am very thankful for people like smartshopper who help me keep my grocery budget low and save money not only just this time of year, but throughout the entire year. Thank you smartshopper from my family to yours.

Buy what you need in December, and every other month, and not what you want.....and you'll have a lot more money left over.

The ads seem to be even more psychological in the last few years with the constant "gotta have" new tech and what not. Lemmings everywhere just wander the mall.

  • Caveman93 Dec 8, 2014

All this "stuff" is unneeded so looks like I'll buy nothing. Bad enough we get pounded with ads now we're being told when be buy things? Really, if you only buy when you need regardless of "when", you'll be just fine people.
