I can remember my grandfather, who was born around the turn of the century into a farming family, telling us the same thing about putting just a tiny sprinkle of salt on tomatoes and cantaloupe. It was in NY, so I don't think they had a long enough season there to grow watermelon.

I was raised eating tomatoes and watermelon with salt on them but I learned that from people that worked the farm everyday. Now a treat is a vine ripened tomato sandwich with mayo & white bread and watermelon fresh cut with nothing on it.

Gator Girl - can't say I have ever had tomatoes or watermelon your way. Sounds interesting.

jdouglas - you must have bought a huge watermelon! The seedless one I bought today at WM is not quite that giant.

Faye, lol! :) Thanks for the advice. Tonight will be the night. I can barely lift the thing while it is still whole and solid. I can't imagine a 30 lb pile of slime... yowza.

Last night was Mexican night. Tonight we're having meatloaf, au gratin potatoes, and broccoli, with watermelon that I've cut up and put in containers in the fridge.

I love to eat watermelon with a bit of salt and pepper. Of course, I also grew up eating sliced tomatoes with sugar sprinkled on too! (Family is from the Midwest.)

Stouffer's Lasagna and spinach with feta cheese.

Jdouglas, this is your subconscious speaking.... cut the watermelon before it is a mushy, yucky mess..... :-)

I'm having leftover eggplant parm. DW is having a sausage and pepper wedge -- that's what we call subs or hoagies in our old hometown. :) We got cubanelle peppers from the farmers' market last week. Yum!

Watermelon if I ever get the thing cut up.

Meatball Subs using 1/2 bag of Cooked Perfect that I got for $1.39 from HT SD early this summer, super cheap Classico pasta sauce from HT SD, some of the cheese I've accumulated over the past few SDs at Lowees and HT. Free McCain French fries from Lowes SD, and a salad.
