DURHAM, N.C. — A 53-year-old truck driver from Transylvania County died late Tuesday when he lost control of his tractor-trailer and struck a concrete bridge pillar on Interstate 85 North in Durham, police said.

Investigators said Kenneth Lyle Anders, of Lake Toxaway, was pronounced dead at the scene at about 9 p.m.

Witnesses said Anders swerved from the center lane of I-85 North and hit a bridge pillar for N.C. Highway 147. Speed and alcohol were not factors in the wreck, police said.

The truck, owned by B&A Hyder, a trucking company in Hendersonville, was a total loss, police said. Tomatoes inside the trailer were scattered across the northbound and southbound lanes of I-85.

The highway was reopened at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.
