Wegmans grocery store possibly coming to Cary

Posted January 21

— Wegmans Food Markets, the No. 1-ranked grocery store by Consumer Reports, is in lease negotiations for a store across from Cary Towne Center.

The family-owned, Rochester, N.Y.-based chain has 88 stores in New York, Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey and Massachusetts.

A statement from spokeswoman Jo Natale indicates, "We have signed a letter of intent and are working through lease negotiations with Columbia Development Group, with hopes of reaching a final lease agreement sometime during the first quarter of 2016.”

Have you ever shopped at Wegmans? What are your thoughts about the store?

Here are the basics of the coupon policy from their website.

The policy they develop for North Carolina may be different and we will know more in the future.

*Wegmans accepts both Manufacturer's and Wegmans store coupons.

*Wegmans doubles manufacturers' coupons that have a face value of $.99 or less.

*Four manufacturers' coupons will be accepted on four of the same brand product per day.

*The value of the coupon may not exceed the retail price, including doubled coupons.

*You can use a manufacturers' coupon and a Shoppers Club discount or store coupon on the same item. You can't exceed the retail price when using both coupons.

*No printable free product manufacturers' coupons.

*They do not double manufacturers' coupons that state "do not double".

*They will not accept an Internet coupon that is over $4.99.

Wegmans also has a Shoppers Card reward card program and Shoppers Club apps.

I used to frequent Wegmans while a student at Syracuse. I absolutely loved the store, the bulk food items, prices were affordable, and food was great. I always stop at one when driving through Virginia to stock up on food that one can only get from a Wegmans. They have fabulous fresh bread, meats better than Harris Teeter, and a selection of bakery items one would expect from a bakery. You all have no idea how wonderful this store is and once it comes, people will be hoping for one by them.

watchhillgirl - I have never been to one as well, but I am definitely looking forward to it based on the opinion of everyone who has shopped at Wegmans. And this article was posted to the home page of wral.com so it's not just Smart Shopper regulars who are commenting. That may explain some of the new faces you mentioned.

Well, I have never been to a Wegman's but I have heard a lot about them and I am excited. We didn't have them in RI or at least not where I lived. More opportunities to save for me! Not sure why some people are getting so upset here on the blog. Normally people are much more friendly. Weird...

I grew up with Wegmans in NY and have long missed them. This will be what the recent Publix pipe dream should have been and never became - save an awesome bakery and deli. Now it's real. Wegmans is #1 nationwide with customers and #1 with employees - the when there's employee satisfaction you get customer satisfaction. Think of the big Walnut St. Harris Teeter or Tryon Rod Lowes COMBINED with a large Whole Foods (everything organic, imported, and exotic) and then add in a Gold Hallmark store and sports store for gifts worth buying. We're used to 35-50K sq. ft. big markets in the Triangle but Wegmans often does 125-145K sq. ft. stores with no Walmart or Target to get in the way. Think 70-80,000 edible items and 600 employees per store. You are not a worldclass American community without a Wegmans or two....

How about bringing something to the Holly Springs /Fuquay area where there is not much and bring more employment in the area

I REALLY hope we get a Wegmans. I've only been to one a couple of times, but it made a huge impression on me. Sure, I'd rather it came to JoCo, but won't hold my breath on that.

Faye, please let us know if you hear any more about it! :)
