RALEIGH, N.C. — In their haste to get out of Dodge – er, Raleigh – a week ago, lawmakers left numerous bills behind, including proposed constitutional amendments, regulatory reform measures, an illegal immigration crackdown and a plan to require two tracks for high school math.

Lawmakers also ran out of time to correct voting districts for the Wake County Board of Commissioners and Board of Education after the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled they violated constitutional guarantees of equal representation. The Wake County Board of Elections is still trying to figure out what that means for those races this fall.

Gov. Pat McCrory still has 37 bills on his desk waiting to be signed, including the state budget, a coal ash cleanup compromise and repeal of a provision in House Bill 2 that would restore the right of people to sue in state court over employment discrimination.

Outside of the legislature, North Carolina took center stage in presidential politics this week, with Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton stumping in the state on the same day. Clinton brought President Barack Obama with her to Charlotte, marking their first joint campaign appearance.

Clinton also has flooded the airwaves statewide with political ads in recent days, showing the importance Democrats have placed on trying to win North Carolina this fall.
