Weekly Wrap: Potty talk
Bathrooms were again the major point of discussion this week, with lawmakers threatening to hold a special session in the next few weeks to overturn Charlotte's new nondiscrimination ordinance.
Posted — UpdatedThe Charlotte measure broadly defines how businesses must treat gay, lesbian and transgender customers, but one provision would allow transgendered people to use the bathroom in which they feel most comfortable. The law goes into effect April 1, but the General Assembly doesn't reconvene for its 2016 session until April 25.
In other news, the Department of Transportation is reviewing the bankruptcy of a Texas toll-road firm that is majority owned by the Spanish company North Carolina has hired to build toll lanes on Interstate 77 near Charlotte.
Also, state and local sales taxes expanded this week to services such as auto repairs and appliance installation. Republicans say they are broadening the tax base so they can cut income tax rates, but Democrats argue that, for most families, those cuts won't come close to offsetting what they're paying in additional sales taxes.
