RALEIGH, N.C. — A Wake County judge barred state NAACP President William Barber and a few other people from the Legislative Building until their trespassing cases from a May protest there are resolved.

Gov. Roy Cooper vetoed legislation that would allow nonprofits to hold casino nights as fundraisers, saying he feared it would allow the video poker industry to regain a foothold in North Carolina after law enforcement has fought for years to drive it out.

The Department of Environmental Quality and the Department of Health and Human Services continue to disagree on a standard for a carcinogenic chemical in the drinking water of homes near coal ash ponds, so DEQ plans to form a scientific advisory panel to help come up with an acceptable standard.
