Weekly Wrap: I'm the map, I'm the map, I'm the map

Posted February 19

— There was more talk of maps on Jones Street this week than in a full season of "Dora the Explorer."

Lawmakers held hearings every day to craft a new congressional district map to beat a Friday deadline set by federal judges who threw out the map the General Assembly approved five years ago because it relied too heavily on the race of voters to draw the boundaries of the 1st Congressional District and the 12th Congressional District.

Republicans decided not to include race at all in drawing the new map, which upset black lawmakers who said federal law requires that it be considered to a degree.

Lawmakers also created a dual track for primaries, keeping congressional races in the March 15 primary and adding a June 7 primary for only congressional races if the U.S. Supreme Court doesn't take action on the judges' ruling before then.
