RALEIGH, N.C. — As the calendar flips to October, political rhetoric, campaign ads and the race toward Election Day are heating up.

Three debates are scheduled in the next six days: two in the U.S. Senate race and one in the 2nd Congressional District race. Legislative candidates are trying to play up the same points, regardless of their party affiliation.

Meanwhile, a federal appeals court rolled back two changes included in the 2013 elections law passed by the General Assembly. Under the ruling, which has been appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, same-day registration during early voting will be allowed, and ballots cast in the wrong precinct will be counted.
