RALEIGH, N.C. — The fact that Attorney General Roy Cooper is a Democrat who doesn't care for some of the legislation coming out of the Republican-led General Assembly has led to a growing pile of legal bills from outside attorneys hired by lawmakers to defend state laws in court.
Cooper also was in the news this week for once again besting Gov. Pat McCrory in the race for campaign cash – the second six-month period he has raised more than McCrory – as the two gear up for an expected battle this fall.

Off the campaign trail, the Energy Policy Council delayed voting on a proposal that would replace North Carolina's renewable energy portfolio standards with a "clean energy standard" that would allow nuclear plants to receive tax breaks similar to those granted to solar farms in recent years.
